God of War Ragnarok Update 4.01 – Whats New

God of War Ragnarok, the highly anticipated sequel to the critically acclaimed 2018 game God of War, has been a topic of excitement among fans of the franchise since its announcement. Developed by Santa Monica Studio and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, God of War Ragnarok continues the story of Kratos, the former Greek god of war, and his son Atreus as they journey through Norse mythology to stop Ragnarok, the end of the world. With numerous updates and gameplay improvements promised for the sequel, fans have been eagerly awaiting its release. But now that it’s 2023, and the game has been out for a while, is God of War Ragnarok still worth playing? Let’s dive into the updates and see if it’s worth picking up in 2023.

  • Developer: Santa Monica Studio
  • Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
  • Mode: Single-player video game
  • Genres: Action-adventure game, Hack and Slash
  • Platforms: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4

Hot on the heels of the last major update, Santa Monica Studio has released a new patch for God of War Ragnarok. Aimed at issues introduced alongside New Game Plus and other extra content, this seems like a small but important update if you’re going through Kratos’ journey once again.

The patch (version 4.01) fixes a bunch of bugs in NG+, like certain armour sets not upgrading past level 9, and quest rewards not being granted. It also fixes a rare game crash when loading saves. Additionally, issues with certain Trophies not unlocking have been resolved.

Equipment:

Fixed an issue where Darkdale Waist Guard or Risen Snow Armor could not be upgraded past Level 9 in NG+.

Quests:

Fixed an issue where certain quest resources were not granted upon completion in NG+ (Lindwyrm Scales, Sovereign Coals, Essence of Hel). These resources will be granted retroactively to players who should have received them.

Trophies:

Fixed an issue where the “Ready for Commitment” trophy would not unlock when upgrading NG+ armor to Level 9 or above.

Fixed an issue where the “Dragon Slayer” trophy could not be earned during NG+ if the player did not craft the Dragon Scale armor during first playthrough on base game.

Fixed an issue where the “Phalanx” trophy could not be earned if the player crafted a Level 9+ shield prior to crafting every other type of shield.

If you receive the armor from the Lost Items Chest in the shop, you will need to restart or reload your game to get the trophy.

Please note that these trophies will be granted retroactively to players who fulfilled the prerequisites between the time the NG+ patch (v. 04.00) and this patch were implemented.

UI/UX:

Fixed a rare case where the application would crash in the UI.

Gameplay Updates:

One of the most anticipated updates in God of War Ragnarok is the expanded gameplay mechanics. The game retains the familiar hack-and-slash combat style of the previous installments but adds new moves, abilities, and weapons for Kratos and Atreus to utilize in battle. Players can expect new combos, special attacks, and magical abilities that add depth and variety to the combat system.

In addition to combat updates, God of War Ragnarok introduces new exploration elements. Players can expect to encounter challenging puzzles, environmental hazards, and hidden secrets as they navigate through the different realms of Norse mythology. The game also features an open-world structure, allowing players to freely explore and uncover hidden areas, complete side quests, and interact with various characters and creatures.

Story and Setting:

God of War Ragnarok picks up where the previous game left off, with Kratos and Atreus embarking on a new adventure in the world of Norse mythology. The game continues to explore their complex relationship as father and son, while also delving deeper into Norse mythology and its gods, creatures, and realms. Players can expect an engaging and immersive story that weaves together Norse mythology and the personal journey of Kratos and Atreus, with new characters, locations, and challenges to discover.
